I had always been aware about the amount of chemicals I used around the house, although I think I’ve been conditioned along with the majority of the general public by clever advertising to think that as long as the chemical cleaners are killing harmful bacteria then they, and I, am doing my job to clean the house and protect my children.

Previously, if I walked into a newly-cleaned house and could smell the dusting polish then I instantly associated it with being clean and fresh.  Actually, whilst it may have been germ free, it was presenting a much more harmful danger.

After reading the new research published recently about air pollution inside our houses, hazardous chemicals being found in household dust, and hard evidence about the detrimental effects of chemical cleaners on ours, and especially our children’s health, I started looking for an alternative way of cleaning.  I was also diagnosed with adult asthma last year and I found that some cleaners aggravated my condition.

I was already aware of eco products on the market which are better for the environment but lots of these still have spray cleaners, and I wasn’t comfortable with knowing that this would contribute to the air pollution in the home.  I wanted to find a truly chemical-free solution.

I tried making a few natural cleaners using white vinegar, bicarbonate of soda among other ingredients, which did work well but I found I just didn’t have the time.

It was whilst talking to a friend that she first mentioned E-cloths.  I hadn’t heard of them before and I had to do a bit of research before I bought them as I simply couldn’t believe you could clean with just water.  The microfibre cloths are made up of millions of tiny fibres that break up, trap and absorb grease and dirt.  It will not do to have any old microfibre cloth – it is the amount of and how the fibres are made that allows the cloths to be so effective.

It has completed changed the way I clean, and think about cleaning.  It takes so much less time than using chemical products, not to mention the savings I make through not having to buy a host of different lotions and potions for different jobs (again, those pesky adverts).

The cloths eliminate 99% of bacteria, including e-coli, which makes them as effective as chemical cleaners but without the harmful side effects.  If I want the room to smell nice I add a little lavender or lemon oil to the water spray before wiping the work surface or the windows (as it happens, both of these have natural properties which kill bacteria and smell good too).

I can’t believe it’s taken me this long to discover E-cloths.  It’s a complete no brainer; cleaning with water is safer, healthier, cheaper and easier – there literally are no disadvantages to using this product.  The cloths are a little more expensive than ordinary cloths but they last for three years so you definitely get your money’s worth.  I sound like a walking advert when I talk to other mums but I can’t believe we’re not all using them.  After all, what’s not to like?
