Allergy Awareness Week

This week is Allergy Awareness Week, hosted by Allergy UK. The event aims to raise awareness of the various causes of allergies, particularly as the weather begins to get warmer and the pollen count increases across the UK.

However, it’s not just pollen that can set off allergies in the Spring/Summer months. We’ve also found that dust mites and other allergens can accumulate over winter, especially if you have an open fire or a wood burning stove; without a thorough cleaning regime, sufferers can struggle with allergens both outside and inside the home.

With that in mind, here’s how to transform your home into an allergy-free haven. We’re running through some allergy hotspots for you to tackle over the next few weeks:

Bedroom

The bedroom should be one of your first stops on your mission to allergen-proof your home, as your sleep can be affected by irritants. The bedroom typically receives less-thorough weekly cleans than other areas of the home, like bathrooms and kitchens. However, it can be a hotspot for allergens, given the amount of soft furnishings that are usually in the space. Here’s what to consider:

Bed hygiene!  Make sure to regularly vacuum your mattress, and wash your duvet and pillows. Most launderettes will do this for a reasonable price, and it will keep them free from mites.

Regularly dust surfaces! Books can be particularly bad for holding dust, which is why we recommend the e-cloth High Performance Dusting Glove, which grabs dust when dry so you don’t need to worry about dampening the pages.

Walls! Bedroom walls are often neglected in the dusting routine. Our Flexi-Edge Floor & Wall Duster will pick up dust, cobwebs and pet hair from all walls, skirting boards and ceilings.

Bathroom

The bathroom is a hotspot for bacteria, but did you know that it harbours a lot of allergens, too? The humidity can heighten symptoms of allergies, so here’s how you can banish the allergens:

Bathroom mould! While you may not usually be affected by mould, the combination of spring pollen and dust in addition to mould may overload your system. Keep your bathroom mould-free by wiping it down regularly.

Chemicals! Many of us are guilty of attacking our bathrooms with chemicals. However, chemicals can have a damaging effect on our respiratory systems, so it’s best to use a product like e-cloth, which removes 99% of bacteria with just water.

Other Areas

Blinds/Shutters! Every time you raise or lower your blinds or shutters, you dislodge dust particles into the air around you. It’s best to clean your window coverings weekly. Our e-cloth High Performance Dusting Glove is a simple solution.

High Things! Lampshades, picture rails, and the tops of doors are prime examples of areas that rarely get cleaned. Our 2 in 1 Extendable Duster makes the task much easier!

Low Things! The spaces beneath sofas, cupboards, and radiators are secret havens for allergens. Use a handy product like our Cleaning & Dusting Wand to reach them with each.

We’re proud to have been awarded Allergy UK’s Consumer Award, as we offer cleaning solutions that won’t irritate allergies. Find out more about the health impact of our products here.
